President receives and holds talks with AU’s Commissioner for Peace and Security Council

President Isaias Afwerki received and held talks at the State House today with Ambassador Smail Chergui, the Commissioner for Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU).

Asmara, 06 May 2014 – President Isaias Afwerki received and held talks at the State House today with Ambassador Smail Chergui, the Commissioner for Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU).

In the course of the meeting, the President pointed out that Africa possesses the potential for solving its own challenges and problems, and that the continent should apply as well as develop it. He went on to underline that external interventions should only be supplemental to African participation rather than a substituting option.

President Isaias further expressed Eritrea’s readiness to play due role in the endeavors Africa would make to solve its problems through internal capacity.

In an interview he conducted with Erina following the meeting, Ambassador Smail Chergui lauded Eritrea’s readiness and interest as regards securing peace and stability in Africa in general and the Horn region in particular. He also expressed appreciation for the idea that Africa should solve its problems on the basis of internal capacity.
