ERITREA REPORT TO THE 103RD SESSION OF THE INTERNATIONAL LABOUR CONFERENCE

PRESENTED BY:
HIS EXCELLENCY KAHSAI GHEBREHIWET
MINISTER OF LABOUR AND HUMAN WELFARE

GENEVA,
6 JUNE 2014

Thank you chair for giving me the opportunity to address this august body

I congratulate you for your election as chair to the 103rd session

Ladies and Gentlemen

On behalf of the Government of the State of Eritrea, myself and my delegation I would like to thank and congratulate Mr. Guy Ryder, Director General of the ILO, for his articulated report, which details what the world needs to do collectively to make our world economically, socially and environmentally sustainable, focusing on formalizing the informal economy.

In this respect, my delegation welcomes the report for it will enable us to heighten our implementation programmes and share our experiences in all Labour Administration aspects. Let me take this opportunity to highlight some achievements of my Government with regard to the goals of the Decent Work Agenda. The Government of the State of Eritrea in addition to its existing development progrmmes has taken proactive measures that include multifaceted food security; employment creation, skills and vocational training, and entrepreneurship programmes are launched.

All social partners, Civil Society organizations, women, youth and students are the immediate participants and beneficiaries of all the programmes in operation. Furthermore, the Government of the State of Eritrea jointly with its social partners and with ILO’s technical support has accomplished different and varied activities that enhance labour administration, social dialogue and tripartite consultation.
Ladies and Gentlemen

We are endeavoring to build up smooth labour administration that requires ample time and effort so as to meet the ILO principles and objectives. However, being overwhelmed by our huge and highly prioritized development programmes, supplemented by No-Peace-No-War situation and unjustified sanctions imposed by the UN security-council, the Government has been financially incapacitated to achieve this noble cause.

Ladies and Gentlemen

The immediate victims of all our challenges are workers and their families, hindering the Government of the State of Eritrea not to comply to the Labour standards properly as it intends. And the implementation of the verdict over the border conflict being differing with the core ILO principles, my delegation therefore, calls upon ILO to join efforts to help us get access to funding, bring to an end the   No-Peace-No-War situation and raise the imposed sanctions. And I strongly believe ILO can play its role in this area.

Finally, sticking to our self-reliance and social justice principles, which is in line with that of ILO, I wish to reaffirm the commitment of my Government towards its reality.

We toil today for a bright tomorrow

I THANK YOU ALL!
