The Nelson Mandela International Day was commemorated yesterday at Selam Conference Centre at Hotel Asmara Palace here in the capital with movie shows and panel discussion, in line with the resolution adopted on Nov. 2009 by the UN General Assembly calling for members States to observe the Day annually.
Asmara, 30 June 2014 – The Nelson Mandela International Day was commemorated yesterday at Selam Conference Centre at Hotel Asmara Palace here in the capital with movie shows and panel discussion, in line with the resolution adopted on Nov. 2009 by the UN General Assembly calling for members States to observe the Day annually.
The event that was jointly organized by the Embassy of South Africa in Eritrea, NUEYS and the UN Office in Eritrea witnessed the staging of Long Walk to Freedom – a movie that depicts the South African people’s struggle against white minority rule under the leadership of Nelson Mandela and his lifetime imprisonment in the course of the struggle for independence.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Yemane Gebreab, Head of Political Affairs at the PFDJ, noted that Mandela was a patriot who waged lifelong struggle for freedom, besides being an intellectual who brought about the liberation of his country by uprooting the racist apartheid system.
Mr. Yemane further underlined that the decisive victory over the racist system paved the way for opening a new chapter and confronting challenges in the nation-building process. In this regard, the PFDJ official stated that the country deserves collaboration on the part of all those cherishing goodwill to the people of South Africa.
Likewise, the South African Ambassador to Eritrea, Prof. Iqbal Jhazbhay, paid tribute to Nelson Mandela’s great role in the struggle for independence and that the nationals are today engaged in vigorous endeavors to build a prosperous nation.
Present on the occasion were Ministers, PFDJ heads, members of the diplomatic corps in Eritrea and heads of UN offices in Eritrea, as well as lecturers and students of different colleges.
