Workshop on integrated and protected area system for conservation of Biodiversity conducted

The Ministry of Land, Water and Environment today conducted a workshop as regards integrated and protected area system for conservation of Biodiversity and mitigation of land degradation at Embasoira Hotel Hall here in the capital.

Asmara, 22 July 2014 – The Ministry of Land, Water and Environment today conducted a workshop as regards integrated and protected area system for conservation of Biodiversity and mitigation of land degradation at Embasoira Hotel Hall here in the capital.

In opening remarks, Mr. Mogos Woldeyohannes, director general of the department of environment at the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment, said that protecting area is not a new thing in our society, and stated that the workshop is aimed at initiating conservation of biodiversity and compacting land degradation by developing modern protected area system through implementing institutional capacity.

Speaking at the workshop, Ms. Rose Ssebatindra, UNDP Representative, explained on her part that Eritrea is endowed with special environmental advantages and biodiversity resources. She also underlined the need to exert more efforts for effective management and enrichment of such resources.

Ms. Rose further expressed the UNDP’s readiness to sustain active collaboration with the Eritrean government to this end.

In the course of the workshop, the issues of protecting biodiversity, mitigation of land degradation and the role, as well as responsibility of stakeholders regarding the project, among others, were duly addressed by experts.
