Selected millet seed produced by Hamelmalo College of Agriculture well received by farmers

Farmers in Elaberet sub-zone well received the selected millet seed produced by Hamelmalo Agricultural College and tested at the Elabered extension farm, and that they would cultivate it the coming rainy season.

Keren, 19 October 2014- Farmers in Elabered sub-zone well received the selected millet seed produced by Hamelmalo Agricultural College and tested at the Elabered extension farm, and that they would cultivate it the coming rainy season.

Prof. Woldeamlak Araia, Assistant Dean at the Hamelmalo Agricultural College, indicated that cultivating selected seed taking into consideration the type of soil and climatic condition of the area increases yield production, and that the selected millet seed is resistant to rain shortage and different diseases.

He further said that 20 quintals of millet could be produced in one hectare.

Ms. Kibra Gebremeskel, expert of seeds at the Ministry of Agriculture in the region, explained that the selected seeds that have been produced by the college have been well received by farmers, and that the different types of millet seeds have been among the well received by farmers.

Mr. Gebreselasie Aradom, Head Agriculture and Land branch in the region, on his part underlined that food security could not be realized without developing agriculture and the awareness of farmers, and that they are exerting efforts to provide farmers with selected seeds.
