Central region: Mother and child mortality rate during delivery on the decline: Report

At a meeting conducted recently, the Health Ministry’s branch in the Central region indicated that mother and child mortality rate during delivery is on the decline thanks to the joint efforts exerted by the branch office and village health workers committee, coupled with enhanced awareness of pregnant mothers as regards prenatal and antenatal care.

Asmara, 14 January 2015 – At a meeting conducted recently, the Health Ministry’s branch in the Central region indicated that mother and child mortality rate during delivery is on the decline thanks to the joint efforts exerted by the branch office and village health workers committee, coupled with enhanced awareness of pregnant mothers as regards prenatal and antenatal care.

In a speech he delivered on the occasion, the Administrator of the Central region, Maj. General Ramadan Osman Awliyai, noted the significance of promoting community health vis-à-vis enhancing the development drive. To this end, persistent endeavors are being exerted. He also pointed out that the regional Administration is making the required effort so as to realize set goals.

Likewise, Dr. Tesfay Solomon, head of the branch office, explained that the Government, in collaboration with partners, has implemented a number of programs towards nurturing a healthy and productive community, and that encouraging outcome is being registered.

According to reports presented at the meeting, a number of health centers have been put in place in Himbirti, Zagir and Tseazega in collaborationwith the population and that promotional activities targeting prevention of diseases among students have borne satisfactory outcome.

In closing remarks, Ms. Amina Nur-Husein, Minister of Health, disclosed that Eritrea has achieved the major Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) thanks to the substantial investment made in the health sector. She also asserted that sustained efforts would be made for still more gratifying accomplishment.

As regards Ebola Virus Disease, the Minister outlined that the necessary preventive measures have been made. Moreover,

Ms. Amina indicated that there is a plan to furnish health institutions in Mai-Temenay, Mai-Chehot, Adi-Gua’edad, Geshnashm, Denden camp and Adi-Shaka.
