Voluntary blood donation campaign being conducted in Gash-Barka region in connection with International Women’s Day

Members of the National Union of the Eritrean Women branch in Gash-Barka region are conducting voluntary blood donation campaign in connection with the 35th founding anniversary of the NUEW and International Women’s Day.

Barentu, 04 March 2015 – Members of the National Union of the Eritrean Women branch in Gash-Barka region are conducting voluntary blood donation campaign in connection with the 35th founding anniversary of the NUEW and International Women’s Day.

According to reports, the campaign is being carried out in Agordat, Barentu and Tessenei Hospitals through joint collaboration between the Health Ministry’s branch in the region and the NUEW.

Dr. Hailom Kidane, Medical director of Agordat Hospital, stated that the region used to face blood supply shortage due to climate and geographical expanse, as well as socio-economic status of the inhabitants. In this connection, he noted the significance of the initiative as regards securing the lives of citizens, and called on other national associations to emulate the praiseworthy gesture.

Likewise, Ms. Afiet Saleh, head of the NUEW branch in Agordat sub-zone, pointed out that the initiative is aimed at keeping intact the pivotal role Eritrean women played during the armed struggle for independence practically by safeguarding patients’ lives through donating blood.
