Eritrea participates in 60th Regular UN Committee Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women

An Eritrean delegation headed by Ms. Tekea Tesfamichael, Chairperson of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW), has participated in the 60th Regular UN Committee Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

Asmara, 06 March 2015 – An Eritrean delegation headed by Ms. Tekea Tesfamichael, Chairperson of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW), has been participated in the 60th Regular UN Committee Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

The delegation presented reports focusing on the steps taken by the Eritrean government as regards elimination of discrimination against women, as well as the 4th and 5th national reports pertaining to women’s rights. Moreover, the delegation gave reply to questions raised by the Committee members.

In a speech she delivered on the occasion, Ms. Tekha Tesfamichael explained that Eritrean women have played active role in the armed struggle for independence and safeguarding the nation’s dignity, as well as the nation-building process. After independence, the necessary effort was made to ensure women’s rights, she added.

In this spirit, the Government has paved the way for women’s active participation in the nation-building process, the NUEW Chairperson elaborated.

She went on to emphasize that the international community is duty bound to put an end to the continued occupation of sovereign Eritrean territory and the unjust sanctions against Eritrea.

Meanwhile, seminars were conducted in the Swiss cities of Berne and Geneva by Managing Committees of the NUEW there.
