The inhabitants of Deret area in Agordat sub-zone have asserted readiness to do away with harmful customary practices affecting females.
Agordat, 09 April 2015 – The inhabitants of Deret area in Agordat sub-zone have asserted readiness to do away with harmful customary practices affecting females. They made the commitment at a meeting in which members from the ministries of health, education and labor and human welfare, as well as national associations in the sub-zone took part. In the meeting, the community members took the initiative in line with the Proclamation the Government issued in 2007 against female genital mutilation.
Mr. Teklebirhan Gebrewold, Administrator of the sub-zone, said that vigorous endeavors are being exerted regarding the avoidance of such acts nationwide, and called on the community to play active role in the implementation of the set program.
Likewise, Mr. Yemane Negash, in charge of children’s rights in the Ministry of Labor and Human Welfare, stressed the need for extending the necessary support on the part of all partners and the Administrations to the initiative that the Deret inhabitants took.
The medical director of Agordat Hospital, Dr. Hayelom Kidane, briefed the participants on the dire consequences of female genital mutilation on the health of mothers.
