Athlete Girmai Gebreslassie secures Eritrea’s first World Championship Gold Medal

Nineteen-year-old Eritrean athlete Girmai Gebreslassie won the men’s marathon at the World Championships in Beijing on Saturday.

Asmara, August 24 2015 – Nineteen-year-old Eritrean athlete Girmai Gebreslassie won the men’s marathon at the World Championships in Beijing on Saturday.

Girmai finished race in 2 hours 12 minutes 27 seconds to secure Eritrea’s first World Championship gold medal. He is the youngest winner of any road event in the history of the championships. Another Eritrean athlete Amanuel Mesel was ranked 9th in the contest.

Girmai Gebreslassie’s shinning victory is Eritrea’s second world medal after Zersenay Tadesse’s silver medal in the 10,000 meters in the 2009 World Championship in Berlin.
