Asmara, 15 December 2015 – International Children’s Day was commemorated in a colorful manner on December 12, under the theme ‘Let’s Discuss with Our Children for our Common Benefit.’
Mr. Kahsai Ghebrehiwet, the Minister of Labor and Human Welfare, pointed out that the Eritrean government attaches strategic importance to the all-rounded development of children and has enacted appropriate laws and policies to promote and safeguard their rights.
Minister Kahsai stressed the need to lay a solid ground for children to freely express their views and thoughts. This is primarily the responsibility of parents, Minister Kahsay underlined. Children must be encouraged to become industrious and contribute to their homes, neighborhoods and schools to nurture a sense of responsibility that will help them secure their future.
Dr. Sulieman Braimoh, UNICEF Resident Representative in Eritrea, stated that mother and child mortality rates have been reduced dramatically with Eritrea meeting the Millennium Development Goals. These achievement are largely rooted on the efforts made by the government and its adherence to the provisions of the Convention of the Child that it has signed.
International Children’s Day has been marked for the 57th time globally and for the 24th time here in Eritrea.
