Funeral Services take place for His Holiness Abune Dioskoros

A funeral service for the 4th Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church, His Holiness Abune Dioskoros was carried out on Saturday, December 26th following night-long prayers and elaborates religious rituals at Asmara’s Saint Mary Church.

Asmara, 29 December 2015 – A funeral service for the 4th Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church, His Holiness Abune Dioskoros was carried out on Saturday, December 26th following night-long prayers and elaborates religious rituals at Asmara’s Saint Mary Church.

On the eve of the burial date, all monasteries in the country conducted religious sermons and prayers in tribute to the Patriarch.
In Asmara, Abune Dioskoros’s remains was escorted by motorcade from his residence to Saint Mary’s Church at 2:00 am on Saturday morning for prayers presided by all the Bishops.

Later in the morning, President Isaias Afwerki, Ministers, and other officials and diplomats paid their respects to the deceased and attended the prayer service at St. Mary’s Church.

The burial service then took place at Abune Abranious Monastery in Mendefera sub-zone where the future Patriarch was first consecrated as a priest at the young age of 17.

Born in 1935, his holiness Abune Dioskoros, 4th Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church, has served the Church in various capacities for over 64 years.

It is to be recalled that His holiness Abune Dioskoros passed away on the 21st of December after a long illness.
