28th Anniversary of demise of Nadew Command

The demise of Ethiopia’s Nadew Command and the 28th anniversary of the historic liberation of Afabet on 19 March 1988 was commemorated with various public programmes.

Asmara, 23 March 2016 – The demise of Ethiopia’s Nadew Command and the 28th anniversary of the historic liberation of Afabet on 19 March 1988 was commemorated with various public programmes.

The Mayor of Afabet, Mr. Ahmed Mohammed Nur Rejeb, stated that the annual celebration of the historic event is a propitious occasion for passing the narrative of heroism and steadfastness to the young generation.

This year’s event featured cultural shows, sport competitions as well as art exhibitions.

EPLF freedom fighters dealt a blowing defeat to the Ethiopian forces of Nadew Command in a battle that lasted for three days in March 1988. This momentous defeat was graphically described by the late historian Basil Davidson as Africa’s ‘Dien Bien Phu’.
