Disposal of outdated pesticides

The Ministry of Agriculture has begun to dispose over 400 tons of expired pesticides that cause serious health hazards to humans and livestock, the Standards Control Department of the Ministry announced.

 

Asmara, 30 March 2016 – The Ministry of Agriculture has begun to dispose over 400 tons of expired pesticides that cause serious health hazards to humans and livestock, the Standards Control Department of the Ministry announced.

The discarding process will be conducted in four phases, the first of which is shipping the toxic materials to the UK for incineration in accordance with accepted practice and the International Convention that regulates the process. So far, 92 tons have been shipped to the UK. The second  shipment was scheduled to take place from the 25th of March to April 7 next month. The rest will be shipped in the second half of the year, the Standards Department explained.

Mr. Tekhleab Misghina, Director of the Department, indicated that the toxic materials are currently stored in warehouses in Adi-guadad and Daar-Pawlos . The disposal process is organized by the Ministries of Agriculture and Health as well as our international development partners, Mr. Tekleab added.
