Head of Soil and Water Conservation in the Southern region Mr. Teklehaimanot Zere disclosed that 113 dams and 253 reservoirs with the capacity to hold over 40 million meter cubes of water have been constructed in the region over the past 25 years of independence.
Mendefera, 02 May 2016 – Head of Soil and Water Conservation in the Southern region Mr. Teklehaimanot Zere disclosed that 113 dams and 253 reservoirs with the capacity to hold over 40 million meter cubes of water have been constructed in the region over the past 25 years of independence.
He further added that water availability in the region has improved five folds compared with the years before independence, which has also contributed to the replenishment of underground water as well as the irrigation of over 4,000 hectares of farmlands in the region.
Moreover, the construction of water diversion canals has supported the irrigation of over 270 hectares of land from the summer rains.
