Sothern Region: Provision of Improved livestock healthcare

The production of livestock products has increased in the Southern Region owing to the investment made since the wake of independence, according to Dr. Oqubazghi Kifle, head of livestock resources in the region.

Mendefera, 09 May 2016- The production of livestock products has increased in the Southern Region owing to the investment made since the wake of independence, according to Dr. Oqubazghi Kifle, head of livestock resources in the region.

Indicating that dairy cattle have been distributed to farmers in the Southern region, Dr. Oqubazghi said that dairy produce has been increased double fold in the last 25 years and thus the number of dairy cattle has risen from 500 to 12,300.

The Dairy Farmers Association in the Southern region is making due contribution in the production of animal feed. So far, two animal feed processing factories have been installed in Dekemhare and Mendefera while around 946 hectares being cultivated green animal feed and about 65,000 hectares of enclosure are playing due role in the realization of animal feed security.

Dr. Oqubazghi highlighted the efforts that have been exerted to boost production of bee farm sand activities of poultry. Currently the dairy farms are meeting around 50% of the overall market demand in the region.

He further underscored that 10 million livestock have been vaccinated in different veterinary centers so far established in nine sub-zones of the region.
