Substantial investment on capacity development of teachers

The Ministry of Education is making substantial investment on the capacity development of teachers, according to Mr. Girmai Gebrehiwet, director of Human Resources Development in the ministry.

 

Asmara, 03 June 2016- The Ministry of Education is making substantial investment on the capacity development of teachers, according to Mr. Girmai Gebrehiwet, director of Human Resources Development in the ministry.

Mr. Girmai also said that in the first years of independence the teaching and learning process was being conducted by the ex-fighters, teachers who have been working under the colonial rule as well as newly recruited teachers without pedagogical training and Eritreans from the Diaspora.

He further indicated that in the past 25 years of independence 8661 training programs have been organized aimed at developing the capacity of teachers and narrow the shortages of teachers vis-à-vis the growing number of students school enrolment and the expansion of schools.

The Asmara Teachers Training Institute, the University of Asmara and other colleges as well as the Asmara Community College are playing due role in producing the much needed number of teachers.

So far, according to Mr. Girmai 6494 teachers were provided skill upgrading training, 1071 trained in certificate level, 503 in degree and 4920 teachers took training in pedagogy.
