Asmara, 15 August 2016 – The Ministry of Agriculture calls on farmers to consider the usage of pesticides in situations where there is no other alternative.

Mr. Kaleab Haile, an expert on crop quarantine and coordinator for disposal of out dated pesticides said that except in occasions where pests pose substantial threat, farmers should adhere to traditional control of pesticides such as through regular crop rotation.  Mr. Kalebab further said that the farmers should only use pesticides under the guidance of agricultural experts if they are not able to control it though the traditional means.

Pointing out that the Ministry of Agriculture has issued a proclamation on the usage and control of pesticides in 2006, Mr. Kaleab said that the Ministry has been exerting efforts to enhance farmers know-how through providing regular training with regards the usage of pesticides.

According to Mr. Kaleab, since 2009 the Ministry of Agriculture has been working for the disposal of pesticides in collaboration with partners. The removal of the outdated pesticides  is expected to be finalized before the end of this year, Mr. Kaleab elaborated.

In a bid to prevent from un-forecasted dangers to human and animal lives, the Ministry of Agriculture has been working for the disposal of around 400 tons of pesticides that has been stored for about 40 years in different areas of the country.
