President Isaias encourages national cycling team

President Isaias Afwerki on Thursday received and encouraged 16 Eritrean cyclists due to take part at the 89th World Cycling Championship 2016 that due to be held in Qatar from 9 to 16 October.

Asmara, 6 October 2016 – President Isaias Afwerki on Thursday received and encouraged 16 Eritrean cyclists due to take part at the 89th World Cycling Championship 2016 that due to be held in Qatar from 9 to 16 October.

The President said that with the growing number of participants in the World Championship the Eritrean government and the people are expecting the cyclists to register as many victories as possible.

The Commissioner of Culture and Sports, Ambassador Zemede Tekle on his part indicated that Eritrea stands first in Africa for participating with such number of cyclists and stands among the top countries at the international level.

The national team coach, Mr. Samson Solomon stated that 6 of the cyclists will participate in the elite category, 5 in the Under 23 age, 3 in the youth category and 3 others in the women’s group.

The cyclists pointed out that the encouragement they are receiving from the Government and the people will have significant input in boosting their morale. They also stated that they will do their level best to register more victories.

According to the index released by UCI, the Eritrean elite and Under 23 age cyclists stand first at the continental level.
