Asmara, 27 January 2018- The Ministry of Agriculture reported that commendable soil and water conservation activities have been implemented at national level. The comment was made at an assessment meeting held on 25 and 26 January in which heads of regional offices and other officials in the central office took part.
According to the reports presented at the meeting, praiseworthy activities have been implemented in all regions in vegetables and fruits development, milk and meat products, livestock health, irrigation farming as well as select seeds production.
Regarding research and evaluation activities, the reports indicated that commendable activities have been implemented regarding detailed documentation of types of crops, research on pests and removing expired pesticides, agricultural products eligible for importation as well as controlling illegal animal medicines and ensuring livestock health.
It was also pointed out that strengthening soil and water conservation, distribution of select dairy cows to farmers, establishment of two metrology centers, creating platform for farmers to exchange experiences as well as distribution of select seeds to farmers are among the charted out programs for 2018.
Speaking at the occasion, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Arefaine Berhe said that even though praiseworthy activities have been made in soil and water conservation there remains a lot to be done, and called for focusing on crops rotation, integrated agricultural activities, strengthening traditional poultry as well as production of cereals and oil crops.
The participants conducted extensive discussion on the reports presented and adopted varied suggestions and recommendations.
