Messages in support of Ethio-Eritrea joint peace declaration

Several international and regional organizations as well as nations and state leaders are sending messages in support for the peace agreement signed between Eritrea and Ethiopia in Asmara on 9 July 2018 by President Isaias Afwerki and Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed.

Asmara, 14 July 2018 – Several international and regional organizations as well as nations and state leaders are sending messages in support for the peace agreement signed between Eritrea and Ethiopia in Asmara on 9 July 2018 by President Isaias Afwerki and Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed.

The United Nations Security Council hailed the Joint Declaration signed by the leaders of Eritrea and Ethiopia, as “a historic and significant” move with “far-reaching prospects” for the whole Horn of Africa region and beyond.

Commending President Isaias Afewerki and Prime Minister Abiy for courageously leading their citizens towards peace, prosperity, and political reform, the statement released by the United States of America underlined that the normalization of relations and the adoption of the Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship between Eritrea and Ethiopia will provide their peoples with the opportunity to focus on shared aspirations for closer political, economic, and social ties. The US statement also underscored that the “Peace between Ethiopia and Eritrea will further strengthen stability, security, and development in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.”

Similarly the leaders of Russia, China, Great Britain, Germany, Turkey, Algeria, Sweden, South Korea, Ukraine, South Africa, Egypt, UAE, Sudan, Djibouti, Kenya, Rwanda, as well as the UN General Assembly, European Union, African Union, IGAD, COMESA, Pope of the Vatican, International Association of Churches, the African National Council of South Africa, and others welcomed the peace agreement signed by Ethiopia and Eritrea and said that the peace agreement will bring about peace, security and stability in the strategic region of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region and expressed readiness to support the two countries in their implementation of the Joint Declaration.
