Call for practicing crop rotation

The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Arefaine Berhe called for judicious utilization of land resources and to practice crop rotation. Minister Arefaine made the call at an activity assessment meeting held in Barentu on 29 January.

Asmara, 01 February 2019- The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Arefaine Berhe called for judicious utilization of land resources and to practice crop rotation. Minister Arefaine made the call at an activity assessment meeting held in Barentu  on 29 January.

Indicating that soil and water conservation have significant contribution in boosting agricultural production. Minister Arefaine called on administrations, agricultural experts and the public to conduct integrated efforts for better outcome.

Minister Arefaine also called on agricultural experts to provide the necessary consultation and professional advice to farmers with a view to raise agricultural output.

According to report present, in 2018 over 219 thousand hectares of land has been cultivated through summer rainfall, commercial farming and irrigation and that 850 thousand quintals of crops, 1.5 million quintals of vegetables and 708 quintals of fruits have been harvested.

The participants conducted extensive discussion on the report presented and adopted various recommendations including the expansion of sweet potato, bee and poultry farming.

Speaking at the meeting the Governor of the Gash Barka region, Mr. Fesehaye Haile called for sustainable water and soil conservation activities with a view to redress the environment and boost agricultural production.
