Eritrea participates at 37th AU Council of Ministers Meeting (virtual)

Asmara, 16 October 2020 – Eritrea’s delegation – led by Mr. Biniam Berhe, Charge d’Affaires in the Mission to AU and Economic Commission of Africa (ECA) – participated at the 37th Meeting (virtual) of the AU Council of Ministers held from 13-14 October.

37th Meeting (virtual) of the AU Council of Ministers focuses essentially on priorities and institutional matters of the Union.

The Eritrean delegation led by Mr. Biniam Berhe, Charge d’Affaires in the Mission to AU and Economic Commission of Africa (ECA) delivered a message concerning Eritrea’s position on the issues raised at the meeting.

Regarding the budget draft for 2021, the Eritrean delegation recalled that the AU had passed a resolution in 2015 to raise funds from member states instead of relying on foreign grants, while the reality remains unchanged. In this regard, the Eritrean delegation strongly recommended for the Union to make good use of its internal resources and enact the strategic decision it made five years ago.

Applauding member states for the successful efforts they are making in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, the AU Council of Ministers stressed the need to reinforce these efforts at regional and continental levels.

The AU Council of Ministers finally approved the budget for 2021.
