Asmara, 31 January 2021 – Encouraging eye treatment is being provided in health facilities in the Northern Red Sea region with the view to reduce and eventually eradicate eye diseases.
Speaking to Erina, Mr. Fesehaye Gergis, head of Communicable Diseases Control in the region said that Trachoma and Cataract are the main causes of blindness and that currently main emphasis is being given to eradicate Trachoma from the region.
According to Mr. Fesehaye the prevalence of Trachoma that was from 5.5 to 10.3% in the sub-zones of Nakfa, Afabet, Sheib, Ghinda and Massawa in 2006 has currently been reduced to zero percent in the sub-zones of Nakfa, Afabet and Massawa and below 1% in the sub-zones of Adobha, Ghinda and Sheib.
Pointing out that regular eye treatment is being provided in Massawa, Ghinda and Afabet hospitals, Mr. Fesehaye noted that most eye diseases result from lack of sanitation and could easily be avoided through preventive mechanisms and medical treatment.
Mr. Fesehaye also reminded the public to avoid harmful practices that could lead to eye blindness and practice proper preventive medications.
