Strenuous Efforts Underway To Prevent Blindness In Girar Hospital

In line with the ongoing endeavors to eliminate blindness in Eritrea by 2015, optic treatment programs are being carried out in Girar Hospital, Northern Red Sea region, stated Mr. Samuel Kebede, health technician in the region.
Massawa, 4 July 2010 – In line with the ongoing endeavors to eliminate blindness in Eritrea by 2015, optic treatment programs are being carried out in Girar Hospital, Northern Red Sea region, stated Mr. Samuel Kebede, health technician in the region. 

Pointing out that the provision of medical services began in 2008, Mr. Samuel said that this program is making significant contribution in preventing blindness. He went on to add that special training is given to optic professionals so that they can provide services by moving around in remote areas.

Accordingly, 1,000 patients have received treatment and 305 were admitted to the hospital, while surgery was conducted on 644 patients. Eye treatment program would continue for the coming six months in sub-zones of Nakfa, Afabet, Adobha and Karora, reports added.

Furthermore, lectures focusing on the cause of blindness and ways of preventing it were offered in all sub-zones of the region to promote awareness.
