Eritrea committed to the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals: Foreign Minister

The Foreign Minister, Mr. Osman Saleh, said that Eritrea is committed to the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs),  especially in achieving  food security. He made the statement in a speech he delivered to the 65th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Asmara, 23 September 2010 – The Foreign Minister, Mr. Osman Saleh, said that Eritrea is committed to the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs),  especially in achieving  food security. He made the statement in a speech he delivered to the 65th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Mr. Osman pointing out that Eritrea has registered impressive achievements in laying reliable infrastructure for  achieving food security, ensuring equitable distribution of educational opportunities, mother and child health care, maintaining sound ecology, combating HIV/AIDS and malaria, as well as providing potable water supply. In this regard, the Foreign Minister explained that the Eritrean government’s substantial investment in the development of human resources played paramount role in the realization of the aforementioned tasks.

Noting that enabling citizens to benefit from equitable educational opportunities is decisive for all-round development, Mr. Osman said that the country has scored gratifying achievements in this domain since independence. In this respect, he said that the number of youths equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills are on the rise, and that they are playing commendable role in national development programs.

The Foreign Minister went on to stress the need for the UN agencies and the international community in general to jointly strive for fostering genuine partnership so as to ensure the success of the Millennium Development Goals. He further expressed Eritrean delegation’s hope that member countries would exert the necessary endeavors towards implementing the MDGs through honoring the pledges they made in 2000.
