Consumption of firewood has decreased by 50% in the Southern region as a result of the introduction of smokeless ovens, stated Mr. Teklu Beraki, head of land resource and seed fertilization branch in the region.
Mendefera, 15 January 2011- Consumption of firewood has decreased by 50% in the Southern region as a result of the introduction of smokeless ovens, stated Mr. Teklu Beraki, head of land resource and seed fertilization branch in the region.
He explained that major tasks were accomplished last year as regards boosting natural resources, promoting irrigation farming system and raising seeds productivity, as well as enhancing fruits and vegetables activities. Besides, training was given to the farming community and select seeds distributed that have borne fruitful outcome.
Mr. Teklu further pointed out that over 40,000 smokeless ovens have been modified, in addition to the construction of terraces and embankments, as well as land leveling activities. He also noted the activities undertaken to prevent soil erosion and ensure animal feed in the sub-zones of Adi-Quala, Emni-Haili and Areza.
Moreover, he stated that 4 micro-dams and 5 water reservoirs have been constructed in the region in 2010, while another 2 micro-dams and 2 water reservoirs have been renovated. Future work plans of the branch office focuses on construction of solid water diversion scheme, promoting irrigation farming below micro-dams and reinforcing soil and water conservation activities, among others, Mr. Teklu elaborated. He also called on farmers to undertake land leveling activities in advance so as to boost production.
