The 9th Eastern Africa Youth Track and Field Championships Competition kicked off today at the Asmara Stadium. The competition would continue for two days.
Asmara, 27 April 2011 – The 9th Eastern Africa Youth Track and Field Championships Competition kicked off today at the Asmara Stadium. The competition would continue for two days.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Commissioner of Sports, Maj. General Romodan Awleyay, said that Eritrea has been participating in various athletics tournaments and has managed to organize the current sports event which is the first of its kind in the country. He further indicated that there are plans to establish a fully-equipped Athletics Training Center.
The President of the Eritrean Athletics Federation, Mr. Leul Fisehaye, pointed out on his part that Eritrea continues to register major achievements in all sports spheres in general and athletics in particular. He further stated that the current tournament would play due role in exchanging experience and strengthening African unity.
Likewise, the deputy president of the East African Athletics Federation, Mr. Jackson Tiwi, expressed appreciation to Eritrea for making the necessary preparations in organizing the competition.
Similarly, the secretary general of the East African Athletics Federation, Eng. Sadiq Ibrahim, commended Eritrea’s hospitality and initiatives for the success of the program, and that more athletes are taking part in the present tournament compared to the previous ones.
A number of athletes from Eritrea, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Egypt and Sudan are participating in the 9th Eastern Africa Youth Track and Field Championships
