The Administration of Hagaz sub-zone has called on branches of government bodies to enhance collaboration as regards doing away with harmful customary practices.

Hagaz, 20 November 2013 – The Administration of Hagaz sub-zone has called on branches of government bodies to enhance collaboration as regards doing away with harmful customary practices. It made the call at a meeting with community rehabilitation workers, members of the local Assembly, representatives of national association branches and participants from other institutions.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Amna Haj pointed out that FGM and childhood marriage are among such practices which cause mortality and disability, and that integrated joint efforts remain to be a prerequisite regarding their abolition.

In the same vein, Mr. Girmai Bekuretsion, head of the Ministry of Labor and Human Welfare’s branch in Anseba region, outlined facts in connection with the negative impact of the harmful customs.

He further urged their perpetrators to refrain from such acts vis-à-vis calling on Area administrators, community rehabilitation workers and stakeholders to step up participation in this regard.

The participants of the meeting put forth views focusing on several issues, while, in closing remarks, Mr. Tedros Fisehaye, head of social welfare in the region, noted the need for exerting further endeavors with a view to promoting behavioral change in this connection. The role of religious leaders is of paramount importance to this end, he added.
