Wekiro: Endeavors Underway To Divert Flowing River Waters For Agricultural Purpose

As part of endeavors to raise agricultural output in Wekiro administrative area, She’ib sub-zone, various activities are being undertaken with a view to diverting river waters flowing from the highlands for agricultural purpose.     

She’ib, 3 August 2010 – As part of endeavors to raise agricultural output in Wekiro administrative area, She’ib sub-zone, various activities are being undertaken with a view to diverting river waters flowing from the highlands for agricultural purpose.     

Eng. Andit Zeraburuk, expert in irrigation farming in the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the Northern Red Sea region, stated that machinery-backed activities are underway focusing on the construction and renovation of embankments and water catchments, as well as preventing soil erosion, which in turn would facilitate the cultivation of about 2,000 hectares.

He further pointed out that although the newly constructed facilities sustained damaged as a result of heavy rains showered from July 13 to 14, they have already been renovated through the collaboration of the Gedem Construction Company and the farming community in the area.

The Supervisor of the project, Mr. Michael Fisehaye, said that the participation of the farmers, agricultural experts and administrators in the campaign is quite high.

Reports indicated that newly constructed embankments and water catchments which were damaged by heavy rains in the administrative areas of Afata, Zula and Hadish have been renovated, while concerted action is being taken to repair similar ones in the administrative areas of Mensheb, Gedged and Shebah.
