Tessenei Sub-zone: Vigorous efforts underway to develop vegetable farming

Farmers around the banks of Gash River are exerting vigorous efforts to raise production  of vegetables and thus meet market demand, according to Mr. Idris Ahmed Siraj, head of  the Agriculture Ministry’s branch office in Tessenei sub-zone. Tessenai, 18 October 2011-   Farmers around the banks of Gash River are exerting vigorous efforts to raise production  of vegetables and thus meet market demand, according to Mr. Idris Ahmed Siraj, head of  the Agriculture Ministry’s branch office in Tessenei sub-zone.

He pointed out that around 1,618 hectares have been cultivated on the basis of modern irrigation including 600 hectares of fruits and to some extent vegetable.

Moreover, Mr. Idris indicated that there are around 180 vegetable farmers in the sub-zone, who have been called upon to raise production so as to meet the demand of the general public.

Mr. Andemeskel Gebreyesus, head of the vegetable farmers association in the sub-zone said on his part that the members have been supplying vegetable to the market at fair price. He also called on the ministry of Agriculture to extend due support.

Meanwhile, Mr. Idris urged vegetable farmers to plant tree seedlings so as to prevent erosion along the banks of the Gash River.
