Association of milk, vegetables and fruits producers in Ansaba region reminded to play role in ensuring food security

Mr. Ghergis Ghirmay, Administrator of Ansaba region, reminded the association of milk, vegetables and fruits producers in the region to make optimal use of the dams and natural resources in their locality and play a vital role in ensuring food security and animal feed.

Keren, 13 February 2012 – Mr. Ghergis Ghirmay, Administrator of Ansaba region, reminded the association of milk, vegetables and fruits producers in the region to make optimal use of the dams and natural resources in their locality and play a vital role in ensuring food security and animal feed.

In a meeting he conducted with farmers from all the sub-zones of the region, Mr. Ghergis reminded that emphasis to be given to Elaberat, Adi-Tekelezan, Geleb and Halhal sub-zones for they are suitable for bee farming. He further called on members of Ministry of Agriculture to make due follow up on vegetable farmers.

In the report Mr. Tesfay Mekonnen, Chairperson of the dairy farmers association in the region, presented expressed that there are around 2, 400 dairy cattle in five sub-zones and explained that last year 16 million liters of milk have been supplied to the market.

He further indicated that the water problem they were encountering last year has been alleviated through the effort made by the region’s administration and that this year they would boost production and satisfy consumers’ demands.

The participants of the meeting after conducting discussion on the report called on for the provision of pesticides to control the prevalence of vegetables and fruits diseases, the Ministry of Agriculture to provide them with selected seeds and fertilizers as well as the provision of trainings to upgrade their knowledge.
