An 18-year-old Eritrean Athlete Girmai Gebresilasie, ranked first in a half-marathon tournament conducted today in Jutuberi, Sweden, concluding the competition in 1 hour and 36 seconds and breaking previous record.
Asmara, 17 May 2014 – An 18-year-old Eritrean Athlete Girmai Gebresilasie, ranked first in a half-marathon tournament conducted today in Jutuberi, Sweden, concluding the competition in 1 hour and 36 seconds and breaking previous record.
The competition which was broadcast live by Swedish media involved more than 64,000 racers, and the steadfast Girmai emerged victorious challenging powerful athletes from Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya.
The half marathon tournament which began in early 1980’s is one of Europe’s biggest athletic competitions.
It is to be recalled that Girmai, joining Eritrean Athletics Team, won gold medal in the global competition in Denmark that was conducted 3 months ago, besides the fact that he stood 3rd last year in a similar tournament.
The Eritrean community members in the Swedish city said that the triumph of the determined athlete added fervor to the preparations they are making to mark the 23rd Independence Day anniversary.
